The $71 million SFO Boarding Area E Improvements project was set to completely rebuild the existing boarding area, adding over 32,000 SF of additional space, expanding the nine aircraft boarding gates, enhancing dining and shopping options, and to achieve LEED Gold standard in sustainability.

Project Challenges:

With a 24 month project deadline, a large number of stakeholder groups to satisfy, and a diversity of specific requirements, extraordinary coordination efforts and outside-the-box thinking was required. The team also dealt with unforeseen underground conditions, irreparable utilities, a late addition to the scope of the project, and a significant water intrusion incident that cost the project $1 million in damage.
