I love to play beach volleyball and give back to the sport through coaching both indoor and beach volleyball. I also play music with a band and have fun with that.
I first was introduced to mediation when I was part of the pilot class for Amador Valley High School’s Peer Mediation program. As an athlete, I developed into the team’s “Glue guy”, serving as a conduit between the professional athletes on our team and management. After graduate school, I wanted to find a way to earn a living making peace and Construction Partnering with OrgMetrics was an opportunity to follow my life’s mission and help support project teams.
My family – My wife Janet and kids Liam and Annie inspire me to do great work and set a great example while trying to spread peace in the world. My sister and her husband work and have raised their children internationally and they inspire me every day. My brother works in solar as an Operations Engineer and is an amazing strategic thinker whom I rely on when I have difficult problems. My parents and close friends continue to set a great example for how to live a quality life.
I love working on complex people problems and helping teams meet their true potential. To me real satisfaction comes from working with clients and team members who listen and apply our strategies to make the impossible happen!
I have a few favorite projects – SFO’s Fire Station 3 Project was the first project I worked on for SFO. We were a small enabling project for the T1 Mega Program and had to overcome a total reconfiguration of the design after the 90% CD’s submittal and the team managed the full redesign to complete the project on time. Each of us, the SFO PM, the Overaa PM and the key field leadership all matured on that project and I feel lucky to continue to work with them on other projects to this day. Plus I had the only excused absence I’ve ever had for Partnering when my son Liam was born! The other two are not typical projects, but guiding the San Francisco Collaborative Partnering Steering Committee since 2016 has been a huge lift and has been tremendously rewarding as was guiding SFO’s 5-Year Strategic Plan “Inspiring the Extraordinary”. Each of these have served as cornerstone projects.
I’m not big on material things, but my Taylor Drednaught acoustic electric guitar is high on the list. I bought it used for $500 right before I left for Germany and recorded my first two albums using it.
I recently had a day where I won a beach volleyball tournament in Santa Cruz, got to facetime with my family on the way to the car to talk with them about it and then played a gig where we covered a bunch of Rolling Stones and Tom Petty tunes that evening. That was a pretty awesome day!
Blues Brothers, The Princess Bride, and Dodgeball.
The Police… I wouldn’t bring much to the table musically, but I wonder if a mediator could have helped them stay together longer 😊
Minimalist – I need all the help I can get to stay organized… that’s why we have an awesome team!
In my heart, I’m a creative. I’ve been writing songs since I was a teenager and taught myself guitar in college. I still love to write songs and create original music.
In my heart of hearts, I’m a teacher. I love teaching communication, negotiation and mediation skills to my project teams. If I weren’t a Partnering Facilitator, I would likely be coaching volleyball either for an NCAA program or a professional club.
I love an adventure! I studied abroad in Cape Town South Africa and returned to Durban to watch the World Cup in 2008. I love visiting National Parks, particularly Yosemite to reset and connect with nature. I’ve done the hike from the valley floor to the top of half dome multiple. Now that our children are getting old enough, I look forward to some longer international trips with them as well. It’s the best way to get a larger perspective.
I sit on the Board of Directors and regularly donate time and money to the Center for Community Dispute Settlement based in Livermore, CA. They provide day of court mediation services, guide mediation training and do other activities related to improving communication and spreading peace in the Bay Area. I believe deeply in sharing these skills with the community.
