The San Jose International Airport (SJC) Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Facility stands as a testament to innovation, sustainability, and effective project management. Situated on a secure air operations area site, the building uniquely combines a public-facing neighborhood fire station with a rear-facing Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting facility, which adheres to strict airport security protocols. This hybrid approach supports improved response times for both the local community and the airport. Additionally, the facility holds USGBC LEED Silver certification, is net-zero ready, and aligns with the City of San Jose Sustainability Memorandum and California Green Building Requirements.
The Progressive Design-Build Project, delivered by Overaa and Yama Mar + Studio 10 with staff from SJC, San Jose Public Works, and San Jose Fire Department, was effectively partnered through primarily online sessions while being built through the pandemic. By working as a team, the project realized significant savings in schedule, budget, and labor through strategic planning and collaboration. Examples included the phased sequencing plan, the early initiation of MEP rough-ins, and the ability to enable concurrent and efficient work by multiple trades. The team also added the Landside Bay (roughly $7M in scope) with only 9 months to go in the project. By managing the project holistically and working through risks as one team, they reduced the schedule impacts by half – delivering on time.
This IPI Diamond Level Partnering Award Recipient used Partnering to help overcome project complexity and helped set a new standard for what was possible for fire station construction in San Jose.
