Project Description

The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) Replacement Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) and Integrated Facilities project is a $142M, design-build post-tension project comprising a new ATCT and a non-secure corridor between SFO Terminals 1 and 2. The tower stands at 221 feet tall with a three-story building underneath. This project used structured Collaborative Partnering™ with Monthly Core Team sessions and quarterly Executive and Stakeholder sessions to complete the project on time, within budget, with no claims and with an excellent safety record.

SFO was entrusted by the FAA to deliver this Air Traffic Control Tower project, which is not only unique in its iconic design and seismic requirements, it is also the first ATCT to be delivered by design-build and also by an entity other than the FAA. At other airports, an ATCT of this magnitude has typically taken one to two more years longer to design, construct and commission. This project has received many awards including the 2016 ACEC National Engineering Excellence: Grand Conceptor Award and the 2016 IPI Partnered Project of the Year Award Sapphire Level.
