Project Description

This $8.5M project in District 1 realigned and widened Highway 20, including replacing a bridge and making other various improvements. The OC Jones & Caltrans team's partnership performance was notable because they were able to overcome environmental constraints and material supply challenges while still delivering ahead of schedule. Beginning in December 2020, in the middle of COVID-19, there was a very tight 103-working-day schedule.

This team used monthly Partnering and substantial coordination with the Design team to amend the design approach to improve drainage systems and upsize precast concrete box culvert systems. The team completed all submittals to deliver the project during the short “in water” work window between June 15 and October 15 of each year. This project was completed safely ahead of the working day schedule and within budget & contingency.  Partnering helped the team monitor the design changes and combine accountability & flexibility in order to make the tight schedule possible.

With the team's effective communication, respect, and essential professionalism, Partnership allowed this project to manage challenges and avoid delays, earning it the 2023 Caltrans Excellence in Partnering Silver Award (Projects under $10M).
