The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) operates a combined sewer system responsible for collecting and treating wastewater, including sewage and stormwater. To ensure continued protection of public health and the environment, the Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP) is modernizing and upgrading the city’s infrastructure. As part of these investments, the Mission Street Brick Sewer Rehabilitation Project focused on rehabilitating San Francisco’s 100-year-old sewer mains beneath Mission Street, from 16th to 22nd Streets and from 25th to Cesar Chavez Streets. To minimize disruption to residents and businesses, much of the rehabilitation work used was a trenchless method known as Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP). Additionally, the project included relocating a portion of the Emergency Firefighting Water System (EFWS) pipeline and a fire hydrant at the intersection of 20th and Mission Street to accommodate sewer improvements. In collaboration with the San Francisco Metropolitan Transit Authority (SFMTA), transit enhancements such as bus stop replacements, sidewalk improvements, and traffic signal upgrades near the Mission and 20th Streets intersection were also incorporated into the sewer construction contract.
