The Grand Hyatt at SFO, rated as the top-ranked airport hotel in 2020 according to SkyTrax Passengers' Choice Awards, is a 12-story, 351-room high-rise project delivered through progressive design-build at a construction cost of $230 million. The LEED Gold-certified facility includes a gourmet three-meal restaurant, cocktail bar, Grab and Go Market, Grand and Junior ballrooms, 17 meeting and event rooms, and state-of-the-art fitness and spa facilities. Positioned at the entrance to SFO, the hotel's construction involved coordination with two interdependent projects, the AirTrain Project, which included the AirTrain Station at the Hotel Lobby, and the Plot 2 Roadway Realignment project, a complex airfield taxiway scope.
The project navigated exceptional complexity as SFO's only high-rise construction project, and the team used monthly partnering sessions to stay aligned as they worked through rapidly escalating market conditions, changes to the structural approach, and shortages of skilled craftspeople in one of the busiest construction markets globally. Collaborative Partnering was pivotal in fostering collaboration and joint risk identification and mitigation between the Webcor and Hornburger Worstell + ED2 Design/Build team, Hyatt Corporation, the PMSS team, and the SFO stakeholders. The project's 2020 San Francisco Collaborative Partnering Award confirmed the outstanding teamwork in overcoming challenges and achieving remarkable results.
