This $99 million operations and maintenance facility supports the Expo light rail transit line connecting downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica. The Exposition Metro Line Construction Authority was responsible for the design and construction of the facility that was accepted by the facility owner and operator, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) upon completion. The 70,000-square-foot operations and maintenance facility includes six light rail vehicle storage tracks for 15 three-car trains (45 total cars), a run-through track, and a run-around track that allows efficient access to the entire light rail vehicle storage yard. Designed to integrate into the neighborhood, which includes business and residential properties, the project is working to achieve LEED certification.
The partnering program included kick-off and quarterly maintenance sessions for the executive team and the core project team and used the monthly scorecard system to assess and tailor the program.
Successes: The team collaborated to manage challenges, including significant unknown utilities, hazardous materials, and late customer specification changes that impacted the site layout.
