Project Description

This $37.7M project focused on safeguarding and maintaining the structural integrity of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge through the application of protective paint coatings to the steel girder spans floor system, which connects the eastern and western approaches of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. The comprehensive process involved sandblasting to remove existing paint layers, followed by the application of a primer coat and two finishing coats of protective paint. Additionally, the project included essential tasks like the reconstruction of deck joints on the lower deck, removal of obsolete traveler rails and travelers, and various miscellaneous rehabilitation efforts.

The $49 million project delivered by Allied Painting was notable in that it was the East Coast contractor’s first project in California. Despite the early learning curve on Caltrans project delivery systems, the team completed the project three months ahead of schedule, demonstrating exceptional efficiency and an ability to add scopes and finish the project ahead of schedule. Moreover, the project team worked extremely collaboratively and finished the project with a 5% savings from the budget.

The team also maintained a stellar safety record with no recordable accidents. The lane closures were executed without incidents, utilizing attenuator trucks for enhanced safety. Impressively, the project experienced zero potential claims, showcasing a streamlined and well-executed undertaking from initiation to completion.
