Sue Dyer, President of OrgMetrics, is an acknowledged pioneer in Partnering across the construction industry. With 30+ years of developing partnering services and facilitating over 3,000 projects she continues to set new benchmarks for the construction projects of tomorrow.

  1. 1986

    OrgMetrics’ Doors Open

Sue Dyer began OrgMetrics with a mission to change the atmosphere of construction projects from one that is combative in nature to one that’s collaborative. She developed a non-adversarial approach to construction projects while acting as Executive Director of what is now United Contractors Association. Sue was Invited to be part of President’s Council for Productivity Improvement, where she Co-created the process that the Core of Engineers later termed “Partnering”.

  2. 1996

Changing the Aviation Industry with SFO

Sue is invited to serve as partnering facilitator for the SFO Master Plan in 1996. The project results are so successful that SFO brought Collaborative Partnering™ into the Strategic Planning process and into many of SFO’s internal and external initiatives. OrgMetrics serves as the SFO Partnering Facilitator and consultant for over two decades, working to create the program that exists today and leading a transformation for how Aviation projects are delivered. Today, both former SFO Director John L. Martin and SFO’s new Director, Ivar Satero have a strong commitment to Partnering; and it shows in the renowned structured Collaborative Partnering program for SFO’s $5B+ capital project program resulting in many exceptional outcomes, including saving 20-30% per square foot on over $3B of capital improvement projects. Furthermore, SFO has not had a claim in over a decade.

  3. 1997

    Partner Your Project is released

With Partnering still in its infancy, Sue Dyer is seen as a leader in the partnering movement. Design Professional Insurance Companies (DPIC) believes in Partnering so strongly that it asks Sue to write a book on her work that can be shared with all of the designers in the U.S. and offers to fund Partnering workshops on all of the projects it insures. Now in its 4th printing, Partner Your Project continues today to be used in classrooms and board rooms as classic in understanding the tenants of construction partnering.

  4. 1998

Caltrans Makes Partnering the Way they do Business

Sue is asked to facilitate a statewide California partnership program between Caltrans and AGC of California. As a result, this group commits to making partnering work on Caltrans jobs and co-creates several concepts to work on. To help foster the culture change process that is so vital to the program, the Caltrans Partnering Steering Committee was formed. The CPSC will also identify barriers and make commitments to overcome them. The Partnering Program Manager Role was also created to make sure that commitments are followed through on, both at the program and project levels. This group was revitalized in 2006 and Sue once again facilitated what continues to be today, a remarkable and committed group of Caltrans and industry members.

To ensure the continued success of Caltrans’ Partnering program, Sue was asked by Caltrans to Author the Field Guide to Partnering on Caltrans Projects; Fundamentals of Partnering on Caltrans Projects, Design through Construction Performance Measures and Implementation Plan; Risk Management Policy document. Sue developed many other deliverables over the 13 years she facilitated the CPSC and has inspired many industry members to continue working to take partnering to the next level.

  5. 2000

Finalized the Development of structured Collaborative Partnering™

From 1982-2000 Sue continues to work with teams and works to develop a model for partnering that provides “predictable” results. structured Collaborative Partnering is a culture change/development process that sets the norms of collaboration and then holds the entire team accountable to those norms. It assures alignment and realignment of the team over the course of the project and results in a lack of unresolved issues and disputes and improved momentum and satisfaction.

  6. 2002

Strategic Partnering with the Division of the State Architect

When a large school bond program was passed and the over 1,000 school districts began to implement their construction programs, they were too often held up by the plan review times that are mandated by the California Division of the State Architect. Sue piloted Strategic Partnering with San Diego City Schools and bin times went from 54 weeks to 12 weeks and then stayed there for the duration of the project. This collaborative process was rolled out statewide to all large school districts and community college districts with a mega construction program and achieved similar results.

  7. 2003

    Developed Facilitated Dispute Resolution™

With a negotiation background, it was a natural for Sue to say yes to helping teams resolve their disputes. Sue created the FDR process for this purpose. Facilitated Dispute Resolution™ is an extension of partnering and allows the team to negotiate fair and justifiable agreements on potential claims where they are stuck. FDR should be a part of the integrated dispute resolution system. OrgMetrics’ FDR has resolved over $1B of disputes and is becoming more widespread in contracts and specifications.

  8. 2005

    Construction Scorecards™ Created

Sue developed The Construction Scorecard as an accountability tool that provides feedback to the team on how they are doing at following through with the project commitments that they made during their partnering sessions. Construction Scorecards provide highly accurate feedback and insights into what is happening on projects and within the team, so the team can “steer” their project toward success.

  9. 2009

    Founded the International Partnering Institute

Sue started the International Partnering Institute with OrgMetrics’ key owners and contractors who had, firsthand experience, strongly believed in the structured collaborative process, and wanted to share the model with others in the industry. IPI is a 501 (C3) non-profit organization dedicated to changing the culture of construction from combative to collaborative. Through IPI, Structured Collaborative Partnering is proving its value all over the U.S. and abroad, on all types of projects and sectors.

  10. 2010

    Authored Caltrans Fundamentals of Partnering

As the largest Department of Transportation in the country, Caltrans sees the need for consistency in its partnering program throughout the entire organization. Based on the Field Guide to Partnering on Caltrans Projects, Sue is asked to author the Fundamentals of Partnering on Caltrans Projectstraining program and also to develop a training for trainers. Sue, with Clare Singleton, is charged with training 80 field personnel to become trainers, who go on to train 4,000 field personnel on structured Collaborative Partnering. “This was the most important thing that worked to implement partnering throughout the organization.” -Chief of Construction, Caltrans

  11. 2013

    Small Project Partnering™ Launched

With the experience of facilitating over 2500 partnering sessions, Sue knows that small projects have not had access to partnering because of the level of effort and cost required. She creates a virtual platform so teams can be located anywhere and still experience the benefits of partnering. Since many of the small project leaders today are millennials, this leading edge approach is appreciated by those who understand the benefits of leveraging technology to improve communication.

  12. 2016

Partnering FIT™ (Field Intensive Training) Released

OrgMetrics once again uses emerging technology to improve the partnering process with the launch of Partnering FIT™. Designed to be interactive, for every person that walks on your projects; the five courses within the Partnering FIT Basics program allow team members to understand the what, why and how of Collaborative Partnering on their project. And, the team works together to discuss and reinforce the lessons learned! Partnering FIT allows everyone, from Laborers, Foremen, Project Managers to Senior Managers to know why Collaborative Partnering is so important and how to successfully implement Collaborative Partnering on their projects to assure results.

  13. 2017

    Construction Scorecard ™ Dashboard

For Large programs, OrgMetrics developed the Construction Scorecard™ Dashboard to view all the projects in a construction program so resources can be deployed where they are most needed. The Construction Scorecard™ Dashboard also uses the Project Momentum Score™ and allows an “at-a-glance” view into the performance of each project within an entire program.

    Project Momentum Score™ Developed

OrgMetrics developed an algorithm that takes all of the team’s Construction Scorecard™ scores and calculates a Project Momentum Score™. This is an easy way to predict a project’s success as it shows positive or negative momentum throughout the duration of the project based on the collective wisdom of the team.
